Team Splitter
Nobody complains that teams were not random enough — they complain that the teams were stacked. Give people a skill rating and this builds sides that actually match.
Players one per line — add a skill number after the name if you want balanced teamsWrite Alice 9 or Alice (9). Skill can be any scale you like — 1–10, rank points, hours played. Players without a number get the average of the rest. How to splitSame players + same seed = same teamsCaptains, duos and people who should not play together
Alice + Bob puts them on the same team. Carol - Dan keeps them apart. One rule per line.Tip: click a player, then click another, to swap them. Works across teams and with substitutes.

Add a skill number
Write
Alice 9. Any scale works — 1 to 10, rank points, hours played. Without numbers you only get teams that are even in size.2Set the rules
Captains one per team, duos who always play together, people who should be kept apart. The splitter works around all of them.
3Adjust and share
Click two players to swap them by hand, then copy the teams straight into Discord.
Even teams are not the same as fair teams
Most team generators shuffle a list and deal it out like cards. You get five players against five players, and one side has the three best in the lobby. Nobody ever complained that teams were not random enough — they complain that the game was over in ten minutes.
Give this one a skill number per player and it stops dealing and starts balancing. On a ten-player list where the gap between sides averages 5.4 points with a plain shuffle, balancing brings it down to 1.0 — which on an odd total is as close as it is mathematically possible to get.
What the numbers can be
Whatever you already have. The splitter only cares about relative size, not the scale:
- A gut-feeling 1 to 10, agreed in the Discord before the scrim
- In-game rank converted to a number — Silver 1, Gold 8, Global 18
- Faceit level, ELO, MMR, or rating from your own stats page
- K/D ratio, hours played, or wins this season
Players without a number are given the average of everyone who has one, so a half-filled list still works. Leave the numbers out entirely and you get a clean random split with even team sizes.
Rules you can set
You write What happens Alice 9Alice has skill 9 Alice (9)Same thing, if the brackets read better to you Alice + BobAlways on the same team — duos, friends, a player and their mic Carol - DanNever on the same team Captains field One captain per team, spread automatically Team names field Real names instead of Team 1 and Team 2 Spaces around the
+and-matter, so a player called Jean-Luc does not get read as a rule. How the balancing actually works
- Players who must stay together are merged into a single unit with their combined skill, so the rest of the maths cannot split them.
- Units are sorted strongest first and each one goes to the team that is currently weakest and still has room — the standard greedy pass.
- Then the splitter keeps looking for a pair of players it could swap between two teams to bring the totals closer, and does it, until no swap improves anything.
- Every step checks the rules: nobody who must be kept apart ends up together, captains stay one per team, team sizes stay as equal as possible.
- Ties are broken with a seeded shuffle, so equally good splits still vary between runs — and the same seed always gives the same teams.
If a rule genuinely cannot be satisfied — three people locked together but teams of two — the tool says so instead of quietly ignoring it.
Uneven numbers
Eleven players and two teams gives you six against five. If you would rather keep the sides equal, tick the substitutes option and the extra players sit out — the weakest ones, so the match itself stays balanced. Captains are never picked as substitutes.
What people use it for
- Scrims and in-house matches in CS2, Valorant, Dota and League
- Community tournaments where teams are drawn on the spot
- LAN parties and Discord game nights
- Splitting a class, a team at work, or anything else into fair groups
Questions
Do I have to give everyone a skill number?
No. Anyone without one is given the average of the players who have one, so you can rate only the people you know. If nobody has a number, you get a plain random split with even team sizes — which is exactly what most other tools do.What scale should I use?
Any. The splitter compares players to each other, so 1–10, ELO, rank points or hours played all work the same way. Just keep one scale across the whole list — mixing 1–10 with four-digit ELO will make the ELO players look infinitely better. Can I force two friends onto the same team?
Yes. Open the options and writeAlice + Bob. Chains work too —Alice + BobandBob + Carolputs all three together. The balancing then treats them as one block with their combined skill. The teams still look off. Can I change them?
Click one player, then click another, and they swap. It works between any two teams and with the substitutes. The totals update as you go, so you can see what your change did to the balance. Will I get the same teams twice?
Only if you want to. The seed is shown after every split — same players and same seed always produce the same teams, which is useful if somebody claims you re-rolled until you liked the result. Press the dice, or Shuffle again, for a different split. Can I pull the players from a forum topic?
Yes, if you are signed in. Paste the link to your sign-up topic and everyone who replied is added, once each. The person who started the topic is left out. You can then add skill numbers next to the names. Is anything sent to a server?
No. The list, the rules and the split all stay in your browser. The only request that leaves the page is the forum topic import, and that only asks for the names of people who replied to a topic you can already see.Running scrims on your own server?
